Waves and Wipeouts – Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau

Dickie Cross lost his life at the Waimea Bay in 1943. Caught out by a large, rising swell at Sunset Beach, Cross and Woody Brown opted to paddle three miles down to Waimea. They hoped they might make it in through the channel, but arrived to find the place closing out, with waves in excess of 40 feet breaking across the bay. Brown barely made it ashore. Cross’s body was never recovered.

I have also taken the time to provide a link to a high-quality version of each trailer if you wish to download this and watch it at the very best quality.

Alice in Wonderland by Walt Disney Productions

I remember reading about this movie a few months ago over @ Geeks of Doom. This is the first good look at the movie though. Yet another of the upcoming 3D ventures to come on the scene. With the recent success of Avatar this one stands to make a killing. Found this video over on G4TV. Here is a quote from their page on the subject.

A brand new trailer has been released for Tim Burton’s upcoming version of Alice in Wonderland.

Last summer, a trailer and a slew of pictures gave us a pretty good idea about the how the morbid, Burtonesque style would be applied to the world established in Lewis Carrol’s original 1865 novel. However, this trailer seems to bring more to the table.

We now get more of a sense of the wider world being depicted in the film. Stunning visuals are on display, as the return of Alice (Mia Wasikowska) to Wonderland is wrought with intense, action-packed escapes from the forces of The Red Queen (a CGI-distorted Helena Bonham Carter) and some genuinely funny irreverence. Also present is some kick-ass action, as Alice goes all Joan of Arc, donning sword and armor to get the job done in a battle that, while not causing the Lord of the Rings team to lose any sleep, looks brilliantly done. However, it is Johnny Depp’s peculiar-looking Mad Hatter who steal the show in this trailer. He’s ALL over it, even picking up a sword to get into the thick of the action himself.

I don’t know too much about the “Alice” story, and I can’t say that I was extremely excited to see another (increasingly formulaic) Burton remake flood the market. In fact, my first impression was that it would be another “quirky” artistic rendition more concerned with proliferating a brooding atmosphere than a compelling story. However, while not radically different from what we’ve already seen of the film, I do like what I see in this trailer. It feels more like an epic story than some pretentious surrealist romp requiring various illegal substances to comprehend.

I may just be up for this one.

Alice in Wonderland hits theaters March 5, 2010.
